IFN-γ (interferon-gamma), also known as type II interferon, is a secreted glycoprotein produced mainly by activated T cells (especially Th1 cells), NK cells, and NKT cells. It functions as a homodimer with a molecular weight of approximately 45 kDa. IFN-γ is a key regulator bridging innate and adaptive immunity. It binds to its heterodimeric receptor, which consists of two subunits, IFNGR1 and IFNGR2. This interaction triggers the JAK–STAT1 signaling cascade, ultimately inducing the expression of more than 300 downstream genes.
