CD138 (Syndecan-1) is a type I transmembrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan with a molecular weight of 85–92 kDa. It binds a variety of cytokines and extracellular matrix proteins, participates in cell proliferation, migration and adhesion, and plays a role in tissue development and injury repair. It is predominantly expressed in plasma cells, pre-B cells, epithelial cells and endothelial cells, and is highly expressed in multiple myeloma cells. Abnormal expression is associated with malignant transformation, and serum soluble sCD138 serves as a prognostic indicator for tumors.
